Making The Most Of Your Mauritius Holiday

When most people think of Indian Ocean holiday destinations, they will usually think of the tropical shores of Mauritius and the Seychelles. These beautiful island paradises are perfect for spending a week or two relaxing on stunning white beaches surrounded by the calm, clear waters of the Indian Ocean. For a truly relaxing and chilled-out break, Mauritius is the ideal holiday location for groups, couples, families, and honeymooners. With so many fabulous resorts offering sumptuous accommodation and superb food and drink, it is the epitome of a luxury holiday in the sun.

More than Just Beaches

The beaches in Mauritius are stunning and are the perfect place to enjoy the sun and sea. However, if you were planning to travel to Mauritius, it would be a real shame if you spent your entire two weeks on the beach. Unless you venture out of your resort, you will not be able to appreciate the true Mauritius and all the country has to offer. There is so much more to Mauritius than just spectacular beaches, so while you are there, get out and explore. Below are a few examples of things to see and do while on a luxury holiday in Mauritius.

• Ganga Talao – Ganga Talao is a pilgrimage site and home to a sacred crater lake. There are a number of temples, shrines, and statues around the lake, and tourists are welcome provided they observe appropriate dress codes and take off shoes before entering the temple. It is best to visit Ganga Talao during the week to avoid crowds at the weekend.

• Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Gardens – The SSR Botanical Garden is a very popular tourist attraction; it has a long lily pond and many varieties of flora and fauna. The gardens also have 85 different palms from all over the world and are a beautiful place to visit while in Mauritius.

• Black River Gorges National Park – The fabulous Black River Gorges National Park covers around two per cent of the island of Mauritius, and is full of thick forest and rolling hills. It is an ideal place for exploring, with many endangered species and hundreds of kinds of plants there. The park has a population of giant fruit bats as well as wild boar, deer, Mauritius kestrel, and pink pigeon.

• Pieter Both – If you love hiking and climbing, then Pieter Both is worth a visit. The second highest mountain in the country, it is famous for the rock formation at the summit, which is said to resemble a human head. Experienced climbers can ascend the mountain, with some stunning views awaiting at the top.

• Eureka House – Eureka House is a colonial house set amongst a backdrop of lush gardens and stunning waterfalls. Excursions are available to this magnificent location and include a tour of the majestic property as well as the spectacular gardens and beautiful waterfalls.
