Mauritius is a tropical location in the Indian Ocean that is famed as much for its fabulous beaches as it is its stunning scenery. So if a luxury beach holiday is your idea of a dream holiday, you will certainly be spoiled for choice if you choose Mauritius. With more than 160km of beautiful coastline and warm waters as well, there is ample opportunity for swimming, wind surfing, and snorkelling. However, where are the perceived best beaches in Mauritius, and which are most suitable for swimming? Read on to find out more. The Different Sides of Mauritius
It might be important for you to know when booking a holiday that Mauritius has different ‘sides’. The north side of the island has the largest concentration of beaches, although if you are looking for the archetypal tropical beaches with white sands then the east is the place to go. The west of the island offers beaches with golden sands, while the south is much wilder and more ‘untouched’ than anywhere else on the island. Those visitors looking to get a feel for the natural beauty of Mauritius might like to see this part of the country.
The Best Beaches
Belle Mare Plage
Belle Mare Plage beach is found on the east side of the island and is a picturesque beach with white sands, warm calm waters, and beautiful palm trees that sway in the breeze. An external reef does its job perfectly by blocking the waves, leaving the waters perfect for swimming and snorkelling.
Belle Mare Plage is actually considered one of Mauritius’s best beaches thanks to a 10km stretch of white sands, a host of fabulous bars and restaurants, and coastal waters that are ideal for water sports such as sailing and windsurfing.
Trou aux Biches
Trou aux Biches also has a reef which is close to the shore and which also blocks the waves. Visitors to this beach can enjoy paddling and swimming in the warm, shallow waters next to the pristine white sands of the beautiful beach. This stunning beach is popular with families and is located in the north of the island.
Ile aux Cerfs
Ile aux Cerfs is an island off the east coast of mainland Mauritius to which excursions take place daily. Weekends can be extremely busy here though, with locals enjoying family trips to the island. The beaches are magnificent though and there is something for everyone including a treetop adventure playground for the kids and an enormous range of available water sports for teens and adults.
Flic en Flac
On the west of the island, Flic en Flac is a popular beach with 8km of golden sand and calm shallow waters, all of which make it perfect for families. Visitors to Flic en Flac can enjoy the snack stalls (gajak) that line the beach at the weekends, and there are also a number of restaurants and a supermarket for those who want to have a picnic on the beach.
