Angsana Opens New Turtle Bay Resort

Late last year there was talk within the tourism industry in Mauritius of several new hotels opening this year. While details have been sketchy, we now know one of the properties is the new Angsana Balaclava located in the northern region of Turtle Bay. Also known in the French language as Baie aux Tortues, this region is famous for its turquoise blue waters and beaches which make the perfect home for some very exotic marine life. It is a wonderful location for Angsana's recently opened property, just 15 minutes from the airport in Port Louis.

As for the resort itself, it is a 51-suite boutique hotel of 5-star quality. It's been designed to mimic a traditional Mauritian village complete with wrought iron gates, thatched roofs, plenty of natural stone, teak wood furniture, and artwork produced by some of the best artists on Mauritius. Angsana's goal with this new resort was to start something new; something that could meet the expectations of the discriminating luxury traveller without pandering to excess.

What we now see at Angsana Balaclava seems to be part of a trend that's started taking root on the island sometime around the middle of last year. More and more the island's resort properties have been scaling back on the over-the-top presentations of 10 years ago in favour of an environment that is more sophisticated and relaxed. For example, LUX purchased three well-known resorts in Mauritius and set about to redesign them with a 'lighter and brighter feel.' The trend seems to be one that favours getting back to simplicity without sacrificing luxury.

Mauritius honeymoons are also on the mind of those in the tourism industry as they seek to compete with neighbouring Seychelles for the beach wedding and honeymoon market. Seychelles has consistently been a leader in that market for some time. Yet Mauritian officials hope boutique hotels like Angsana Balaclava can offer a romantic and secluded environment enticing enough to bring more of those honeymoons and beach weddings to their island.

Those who have already visited Mauritius know what an ideal setting it is for a beach wedding or honeymoon. The warm tropical environment, crystal clear water, and stunning sunsets make for one of the most romantic places on earth. And many of the resorts, boutique and otherwise, offer private accommodations built out over serene and peaceful lagoons. These private suites and villas provide the perfect love nest for both younger and older couples alike.

As 2012 rolls on it will be interesting to see if any other properties open on Mauritius. If so, one wonders if they will continue this latest trend of laid-back sophistication. Perhaps this might be the time for you to book your holidays to Mauritius if you've never been.
