Annual Mauritius Ocean Classic Brings Kayakers To Mauritius

For the third straight year the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius was chosen to host a kayaking event as part of the 2011 World Surf Ski Series. The Island Shamaal Mauritius Ocean Classic Third Edition, sponsored by Australia's Epic Kayaks, was held July 2 off the coast of Le Morne in southwest Mauritius. It attracted more than 80 competitors representing countries like the United States, the U. K, Germany, Australia, and Namibia. Of the total number of participants in the field, 18 were local individuals.

Mauritius was chosen again this year because of the ideal conditions and the downwind challenge it presents to paddlers. According to 2009/2010 world champion David Mocke, the Indian Ocean's crown jewel is "a great place to host this event and a very challenging spot. The competitors will have to be well prepared and ready to face the difficulties of the Indian Ocean". This year's event was no less challenging as competitors raced the 330km from Souillac to Le Morne.

The race was good not only for the competitors and Epic Kayaks, but also the island's hotels and resorts which played host to the visitors. Special events like this, and the Mercedes-Benz golf tournament held earlier this year, bring specific types of tourists who may otherwise not have a reason to visit Mauritius. And as the travel industry knows, once someone has visited the region it's almost guaranteed they'll be back in the future on personal holidays.

That's true because of the near perfect environment Mauritius offers. The picture-perfect turquoise blue waters we often see on postcards are complements of a series of natural reefs that keep the Indian Ocean at bay. These barriers not only provide gorgeous waters, but also a dizzying array of tropical water sports that include snorkelling, diving, fishing, and wind surfing. In fact, Mauritius is known for being an aquatic playground.

On shore she's also known for her exquisite championship-level golf courses. No fewer than four such courses are present on the island, with scores of others that are equally beautiful and worthy of play. For the golf lover, particularly those from the UK, being able to hit the links in a tropical paradise is one of the best luxury package holidays you could ask for. And if you're lucky enough to stay at one of Mauritius' luxury golf resorts, you'll be in golf heaven.

Beyond water sports and golf, the island also provides beautiful views of the ocean, peaceful lagoons, majestic mountain peaks, and tropical gardens full of local flora and fauna that can't be seen anywhere else. Mauritius is so magnificent for the senses that the locals have an old saying which claims God created Mauritius first and the Garden of Eden after that. Whether that's true or not, once you visit this island you'll not want to return home.

If you're a kayaker or a fan of the sport, be on the lookout for next year's event. If it returns to Mauritius, and there's no reason it wouldn't, you should book your reservations early so you don't miss out. You'll be glad you did.
