Mauritius – So Much More Than A Beach Resort

With its dreamy beaches, azure waters, tropical climate, and some of the tastiest cuisine in the world, Mauritius has to be the ideal holiday destination for laying back and recharging those worn out and overworked batteries. This little Indian Ocean island is a haven of tranquillity, offering a wonderful escape from everyday life.

Mark Twain was once quoted saying 'Mauritius was made first and then heaven; and heaven was copied after Mauritius', and certainly those taking holidays to Mauritius every year will agree that the island is indeed a heavenly holiday destination. Celebrities such as Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones choose Mauritius as one of their favourite holiday destinations, and Princes William and Harry have both followed in the path of their great-aunt Princess Margaret and spent time on the multi-cultural island.

Get Active on a Quad Bike

While lying on a beach everyday suits some visitors, others like to get a little more physical and this is something else that Mauritius does well. There are simply dozens of ways to let off steam and enjoy the island at more than a leisurely pace. For instance, nature lovers can combine a look at the natural side of the island while taking an exhilarating quad bike ride within the huge nature reserve at Wolmar Flic en Flac.

Following an experienced tour guide along the reserve paths, there are breath-taking views and glimpses of local deer, birds, and wild hare. Within the forests there are many wild monkeys, while there is a compound further in the resort containing wild boar. While the bike ride is fairly sedate through areas populated by wildlife, there is also a chance to open the throttle and pick up speed outside the animal compounds.

Catching the Waves

While scuba diving and snorkelling are popular ways to enjoy the coral reefs and marine life, the sea on the west coast of Mauritius is perfect for lovers of surfing. The best spot by far is Tamarin Bay, where the Black River flows into the ocean. Novice surfers can stay close to the mouth of the river, where the waves are less fierce and the waters are shallow, while experienced surfers will find high breaking waves outside the reef to the left of the river mouth.

South of Tamarin lies Le Morne with its surfing spot ‘One Eye Wave’. This is an area for true professional surfers, because of strong currents and high waves, and it is best accessed by boat. And even further south is the Ilot Sancho where an annual surfing competition is held to find the best of Mauritius' surfers.
