Mauritius Poised To Break 1 Million Mark This Year

After what appeared to be another rocky start to the year, some experts were wondering whether Mauritius would top 1 million arrivals for 2014. Much of that wondering has been erased after a very good first half of the year.

According to Statistics Mauritius, more than 490,600 arrivals made it to the Indian Ocean island during the first six months of 2014. That represents an increase of 4% over the same period in 2013. Moreover, as you may already know, the best is yet to come. The heaviest travel season for Mauritius begins in October and runs through until the middle of January.

The numbers from Statistics Mauritius show that the island did not quite reach the 1 million mark last year. It fell short by about 7,000 when all was said and done. However, forecasters are fairly confident that this year's numbers will exceed the long-standing goal by about 30,000.

Spearheading the better numbers are tourists from China. They have doubled their numbers since last year, according to Island Crisis. Also doing better are the UK and France. Mauritius has been awaiting a return to normal among European markets after arrivals fell off in response to the Michaela Harte tragedy of a few years ago. Now that the publicity surrounding the event has worn off though, things seem to be returning to normal.

A Lot to Offer

As a tropical destination, the island of Mauritius has a lot to offer to both luxury and budget travellers. For example, French holidaymakers are marketing the island as an ideal honeymoon and wedding destination for couples not interested in a ceremony at home during the autumn and winter months. Of course, the gorgeous sunsets and beautiful white sand beaches don't hurt either. They make the ideal backdrop for a romantic wedding and honeymoon never to be forgotten.

Beyond spectacular weddings and honeymoons, Mauritius also makes a great destination for families, older couples, and corporate travel. There is plenty to see and do for every budget and taste.

Do you enjoy water sports If so, Mauritius has more choices than you can possibly handle in a single trip. There is water skiing, surfing, parasailing, boogie boarding, diving, deep-sea fishing, island hopping, glass bottom boat tours, and so much more. You could spend all day on the water without exhausting your options.

Inland there is a plethora of hiking and biking opportunities, along with excellent nightlife and the dynamic shopping districts in the north. Suffice to say that Mauritius has everything you are looking for in a holiday – including plenty of easy relaxation.
