New Development Coming To Bagatelle, Mauritius

Fresh off the heels of opening the largest shopping mall in Mauritius, ENL Ltd. has announced plans to further develop the west central city of Bagatelle with a combination of residential housing, office space, a micro brewery, and a motor city - all of which would add up to about 1.5 billion rupees in total investments. The first phase of the project was completed with the opening of the 452,000 square-foot mall last week. ENL Ltd. and co-investor Atterbury Investment Holdings, of South Africa, spent about 2.5 billion rupees on the shopping centre.

Bagatelle is south-east of the nation's capital of Port St. Louis and fairly central to most of the island's major tourist hotspots. Development of the area seems to be a natural fit given the fact that the shopping mall is designed to attract both tourists and locals heading out for a day trip of shopping. Once the development is complete, near the end of 2012, it will transform Bagatelle from a typical Mauritian village into a municipality with the designation of small town.

In announcing development plans, ENL Ltd. CEO Hector Espitalier-Noel told reporters, "In the coming years, a business hotel, residences, an office park, warehousing facilities as well as a micro-brewery and a motor city will confer to Bagatelle the status of a small town."

For Indian Ocean travellers, the new development means that holidays to Mauritius have yet another experience to offer. The island is already one of the favourite holiday destinations for families, couples, honeymooners, and corporate gatherings. The combination of impeccable hospitality and the tropical environment are extremely inviting regardless of the occasion for visiting. And while tourism is up slightly at most popular destinations Mauritius has been leading the pack since the beginning of the year with arrivals up about 7% and tourist revenues up about 9%.

Travel brochures often talk about Mauritius' crystal-clear waters, peaceful lagoons, white sand beaches, warm temperatures, and gloriously beautiful natural surroundings. But there is also a wonderful and eclectic culture in her major cities like Port St. Louis. Day trips to the nation's capital are fairly common among tourists who go to shop, dine, tour historic sites, etc. When the Bagatelle development is completed travellers will be able to visit both cities in one day for an even better experience.

As for the remainder of this year, Mauritius is heading into the peak tourist season in very good shape. With both arrivals and revenue up for 2011 tourist officials are hoping to carry that momentum into November and December, and then to 2012. Government officials and industry experts have managed to line up several special events leading into the Christmas holidays including a pro golf tournament in December and special Christmas-themed programs at various resorts.
