New Mauritius Hotels Ltd. (Nmh) Leads Mauritian Stock Rebound

After two days of back-to-back losses earlier in the week, Mauritian stocks regained ground primarily due to a positive outlook for tourism. The biggest gainer in the rebound was New Mauritius Hotels Ltd. (NMH), one of the largest tourism-based companies in the Indian Ocean region, which saw its stock jump by 3%. The increase represents the hotel chain's largest since mid-February. Sun Resorts Ltd. was the second strongest performer, with a 1.6% increase that took its stock to an 11-month high.

All of this good news for Mauritius hotels comes on the heels of recent numbers which show tourism on the island is up. Just for the month of April alone, the number of arrivals was 10% higher than the same period last year. The increase in the Mauritian tourism is in line with similar numbers being reported by Seychelles and some of the other local destinations. This is especially good news to the Mauritius Ministry of Tourism which recently announced a new low-cost airline designed to bring more visitors to the island.

According to a Port Louis newspaper, Mauritius saw nearly 65,000 visitors in April 2011, with nearly 70% of them coming from Europe. For an island nation that relies so heavily on tourism for its national economy, so many visitors represent a huge boost in GDP. It appears as though the ongoing, two-year efforts of government officials and leisure industry leaders are a finally paying off.

Mauritius luxury holidays make up a good portion of the tourism activity on the island. Travel companies are providing exceptionally good deals in concert with the island's luxury resorts, including all inclusive packages which provide airfare, lodging, food, etc. And because of its tropical climate and beautiful natural surroundings, the island is an ideal spot for honeymooners, weddings, and even luxury business gatherings.

European visitors are especially fond of Mauritius because of the many options a holiday there provides. Those who prefer to do nothing but relax have plenty of turquoise-blue water, white sand beaches, and bright blue skies to enjoy. The island also offers an incredible selection of championship golf courses for those who wish to spend the days on the links.

Beyond the resort atmosphere there are plenty of natural wonders to behold, as well as two World Heritage Sites that are very welcoming to tourists. Finally, Mauritius is home to a great cultural mixture of French, British, Indian, African, and indigenous influences. From food to music to entertainment, the Mauritius experience is like none other.

Mauritian leaders are hopeful that the tourism numbers will continue to rise throughout 2011 and into 2012. In fact, there is optimism in some circles that the Indian Ocean tourism industry may eventually be able to reach the record levels set in 2005. How long that will take remains unclear, but it appears they may be well on their way.
