Successful 2011 Bodes Well For 2012

Although December 2011 numbers have not yet been released by official government sources, it's anticipated they will eventually show nearly 940,000 total arrivals to Mauritius for the 2011 calendar year. Based on a combination of December's projections and the already counted 852,347 of arrivals through November, Mauritius should have no problem reaching that number. And while that news is great news for an island destination whose arrivals dropped off with the economic plunge of a few years ago, it could be a harbinger of even better things to come in 2012.

At 940,000 arrivals, that would represent an increase over 2010 of about 4%. It's a little bit slower than the average 5% to 7% increase seen between January and June, but that's to be expected as the tourist season drops off during the summer months. Nonetheless, the Mauritian tourism industry has had a goal of 1 million visitors for the 2012 calendar year since the end of 2010. If the 2011 numbers are as good as projected, and the worldwide economy continues to strengthen, that 1 million visitor goal is well within reach.

That said, some industry experts caution that reaching the 1 million mark may not be the important milestone it's being made out to be. They cite the continuing expansion of unused bed space with several new resorts opening on the island between late 2011 and 2012. On the other hand, opponents say that the increased beds are being pursued in response to demand from customers. They say there's always a need for more space just in case reality exceeds expectations.

As for the traveller himself, most that come to Mauritius are not all too concerned with what the experts think. They come for the beautiful sunshine, warm ocean breezes, water sports, the luxury resorts, and everything else the region has to offer. In fact, Mauritius holidays virtually sell themselves regardless of projections for 2012.

If you've never been to Mauritius, and you're wondering what there is to do, rest assured you can be as active or inactive as you prefer. The island is quickly gaining a reputation as the premier golf destination in the region, with several championship level courses that have attracted major tournaments in the past. Golf is such a hot commodity in Mauritius that some of the resorts are now in the process of developing complete family packages for a golf holiday.

Beyond golf you'll find plenty of other sporting activities including diving, snorkelling, windsurfing, sailing, big game fishing, and so on. On land you'll enjoy volleyball, bike riding, hiking, and strolling along the beach or through one of the lush gardens. You can head inland for exclusive shopping, dining, and the nightlife, or you can lose yourself in luxury at a resort spa designed just for that purpose. Regardless of your tastes and budget, Mauritius has something for everyone -- all in a tropical atmosphere second to none.
