Teeing Off In Mauritius – Warm Weather Golfing At Its Very Best

Mauritius may be a small island nation at just 2040 sq. km but it contains an impressive number of golf courses. Back in 1844 while under British rule, Mauritius became the third country in the world to become acquainted with this ancient game that originated in fifteenth century Scotland. Today, eight 18-hole golf courses and five 9-hole courses provide enough variation and degrees of difficulty to allow the most ardent golfers many hours on the greens in Mauritius.

Mauritius is continually looking for ways to promote itself to the global tourist market and one of its key objectives is to become the best golf destination in the Indian Ocean, as well as becoming a major reference point for the world's golf industry. Having already been awarded the title of Golf Destination of the Year within Africa, the Gulf States and the Indian Ocean, Mauritius is well on its way to achieving its goal.

Optimal Conditions

Mauritius is one of the few countries in the world that can offer spectacular golf courses on amazingly beautiful sites with the ocean acting as a backdrop. These optimal conditions are what makes the Mauritius golfing experience so satisfying and why lovers of the sport come back to the best Mauritius golf resorts time and time again.

World-class players including Ernie Els, Bernhard Langer, and Rodney Wright have designed some of the island’s courses, and the greens are maintained to the highest standards by teams of dedicated green-keepers. While many of the courses are attached to hotels, they are open to visitors and are enjoyed by many players of differing standards.

Great Golf Courses

Tamarina Golf Club is the only course not attached to a hotel but is easily accessible from Sugar Beach or La Pirogue. Tamarina is situated on the west coast of the island, and the course is played on rugged terrain with breath-taking mountain and ocean backdrops. The course contains areas of mature woodland, ravines, and a variety of water features, including pretty rivers.

Golf Du Chateau can be found on the south coast of the island within the Bel Ombre Estate. Described as one of the hardest courses in Mauritius, Golf Du Chateau has plenty of elevation changes, mountain and ocean views from every hole, and some of the most breath-taking scenery on the island. The finishing stretch is beautiful but difficult, with hole 17 being the toughest par 4 over the brow of a hill followed by a long carry across the valley.
