Vanilla Islands To Work Together For Sake Of Tourism

In a bid to end claims that Mauritius copied the annual Seychelles carnival, the chairman of the MTPA (Mauritius Tourism Promotional Authority), Mr. Robert Desvaux met with the Seychelles press while on a working visit to the island. Mr. Desvaux was keen to explain that there was some confusion in terms of what the Mauritius intentions were and what was being announced. He then pointed out that what was actually proposed by the MTPA was a ‘shopping fiesta’ which would include a carnival of Flic en Flac and a sailing regatta as well as a number of other activities. This fiesta is to take place from 29th June to 5th August 2012.

With Elsia Grandcourt the Seychelles Tourism Board CEO, Pascal Viroleau, IIle Réunion Tourisme of La Réunion Head and Minister for Tourism and Culture in the Seychelles Mr. Alain St. Ange in attendance, Mr. Desvaux expressed the importance of agreeing that it would be the Seychelles that would continue to hold the Vanilla Islands event in the form of their annual carnival.

At the press conference, Mr. St. Ange told of a previous meeting between the aforementioned representatives from Seychelles, Mauritius and La Reunion where agreements were made on a number of issues concerning the Vanilla Islands. There will now be four events in the Vanilla Islands calendar which will include the Mauritius Shopping Fiesta, the Seychelles Carnival International de Victoria, the La Réunion Liberté des Métisses et Food Festival and the Madagascar International Tourism Fair. Working together in this manner should ensure that tourism increases to all islands.
