Visitor Numbers Down Slightly But Tourism Revenue Increases In Mauritius

According to data, revenue from tourism in Mauritius has risen by 15.6% for the first quarter of 2012 compared with the same quarter last year. This is despite a slight reduction in arrivals. According to the Bank of Mauritius, gross tourism for the first quarter of the year was estimated at $465.77 million whereas the same quarter in 2011 was $404.1 million. However from January to March 2011, there were 262,626 visitors to Mauritius compared with 261,995 from January to March 2012. The reason for this drop in numbers was attributed to the economic problems in Europe, which is where around sixty six percent of the visitors to the Indian Ocean island come from. European visitor numbers dropped by 5.1% in April this year; however, the forecast for 2012 has been maintained by Statistics Mauritius with arrivals expected to rise by around 1.6% for the entire year.
